GH Second Graders Participate in Community Celebration

Second grade classes at Glen Head School recently had a Community Celebration where each child became a member of their community including a fireman, policeman, school teacher, doctor, train conductor, and postal worker just to name a few! As part of the celebration, the students sang and acted in their own version of "Who are the People in Your Neighborhood." Additionally, they built mini towns called Box Town, Mega Island and Ajelloville in their classrooms and shared comprehensive written reports with their families.

Mrs. Loring said, “In our classrooms, the students not only learned about different communities but had the opportunity to go out into the North Shore community to learn more about their own neighborhood.” She continued, “We emphasized that communities are interdependent. They need each other and the people who live inside to remain happy, healthy and safe.”

Additionally, the second graders studied the following: Urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods, rules and laws, goods and services, needs and wants, and public and private places. Like in a “real” community, the second graders also developed specific laws and rules of their own communities in the classroom. Bravo to the entire second grade at Glen Head School under the direction of their teachers for learning all about their community, working so hard, and creating important rules to live by!
