The weather is warm, the sun is shining, and it is time for Summer Reading! Whether you’re lounging on an Adirondack chair under a shady tree, or relaxing on a beach blanket in the sand, summer presents the wonderful opportunity to enjoy books in a relaxed and leisurely setting.
The North Shore High School English 9H teachers are eager to share that experience with you. They, therefore, present three intriguing choices for your Summer Reading assignment.
While most students prefer purchasing their books, copies will be available at North Shore Middle School, North Shore High School, and both the Sea Cliff and the Gold Coast Public Libraries. You can even download eBook versions!
The assignment will be graded as a formal first quarter assessment at the end of September (rubric attached).

Beartown, by Frederick Back
People say that the tiny community of Beartown is finished. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded it, and that ice rink becomes the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.
Bird Box, by Josh Malerman
Something is out there . . .Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from. Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go--blindfolded. One wrong choice and they will die.
Kindred, by Octavia Butler
Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is suddenly mysteriously transported through time from her home in California to the pre-Civil War South, where Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, is drowning. Dana saves him, only to find herself again suddenly transported home to her California living room, soaking wet. As the novel progresses, Dana is thrown back repeatedly into the dangerous time of slavery, and as each stay grows longer, it also grows more dangerous until Dana’s very life is threatened.
