Welcome Back to School! The month of September begins with a number of activities and celebrations designed to help your child get to know new people and “catch-up” with old friends. Students will have many opportunities to become acquainted with classmates as teachers work hard to develop a class community based on mutual respect and concern. Some of these celebrations and activities are described below.
September 6th- First Day of School! All of our students will be warmly welcomed to the new school year. Kindergarten parents are invited to attend our “Tissues, Tea and Turnover” meeting in Room 100 at 8:30 AM. Please be reminded that this is a half day of school. Dismissal will be at 11:40. (September 7th will also be a half day of school.) Our first full day of classes begins on September 8th. Dismissal will be at 2:40 that day.
September 7th – All kindergarten students and their parents are invited to meet at the North Shore Community Youth Organization playground for a play date at 12:00 PM.
September 9th - Students will have a chance to catch up will former classmates and teachers during our annual Reading Reunion.
The second week of school will include our traditional opening ceremony, also known as Convocation, which will take place on September 16th. This is an assembly where the student body welcomes new students to Glen Head, including our kindergarten students. At this celebration we ask fifth grade students who have kindergarten siblings to officially launch the school year with the “passing of the torch.” It will involve the singing of songs and culminate in a skit performed by our very talented staff. (This assembly is only for students as there is limited space. Pictures taken from this celebration will be posted on the Glen Head School webpage and/or video display in the main lobby.)
There are just as many opportunities for parents to meet new friends and catch-up with old ones. The PTO Family Barbeque is scheduled for September 23rd at 5:00 PM on the Glen Head School field. (The rain date is September 30th.) This has become an event we all look forward to and has included a majority of families. Other ways to get involved include, Back-To-School Night which is scheduled for September 15th and the first PTO meeting will also be held on September 22nd at 9:00 AM in Room 100.
School Photo Days will take place on September 28th and 29th. Volunteers are always needed. Contact Cindy Ayres or Jane Launer if you would like to provide assistance to the PTO.
Attending school functions and helping at PTO events are great ways to meet people and support your child’s school at the same time. I truly believe the more parents are involved in our school, the more involved children will become. They will certainly follow your lead!
October 29th is Homecoming! All Glen Head students are asked to come together as a learning community and march in the parade on that day at 9:30 AM.(Line-up will be Glenwood Landing School.) We will march to the high school together. I hope all families will consider joining me at the parade!
Students will be rewarded with a day full of fun and community spirit!
