Dear Glen Head Families,
Welcome Back to School! The month of September begins with a number of activities and celebrations designed to help your child get to know new people and “catch-up” with old friends. Students will have many opportunities to become acquainted with classmates as teachers work hard to develop a class community based on mutual respect and concern. Some of these celebrations and activities are described below.
September 5th- First Day of School! All of our students will be warmly welcomed to the new school year. Kindergarten parents are invited to attend our “Tissues, Tea and Turnover” meeting in Room 100 at 8:30 AM. Please be reminded that this is a half day of school. Dismissal will be at 11:40 AM. (September 6th will also be a half day of school.) Our first full day of classes begins on September 7th. Dismissal will be at 2:40 PM that day.
September 6th – All kindergarten students and their parents are invited to meet at the North Shore Community Youth Organization playground for a play date at 12:00 PM.
September 12th - Students will have a chance to catch up will former classmates and teachers during our annual Reading Reunion.
The third week of school will include our traditional opening ceremony, also known as Convocation, which will take place on September 21th. This is an assembly where the student body welcomes new students to Glen Head, including our kindergarten students. At this celebration we ask fifth grade students who have kindergarten siblings to officially launch the school year with the “passing of the torch.” It will involve the singing of songs and culminate in a skit performed by our very talented staff. (This assembly is only for students as there is limited space. Pictures taken from this celebration will be posted on the Glen Head School webpage and/or video display in the main lobby.)
There are just as many opportunities for parents to meet new friends and catch-up with old ones. The PTO Family Barbeque is scheduled for September 14th at 5:00 PM on the Glen Head School field. (The rain date is September 21st) This has become an event we all look forward to and has included a majority of families. Other ways to get involved include, Back-To-School Night which is scheduled for September 20th and the first PTO meeting will also be held on September 13th at 9:30 AM in Room 100.
School Photo Days will take place on September 26th - 28th. The Photo Retake Day is scheduled for October 25th. Volunteers are always needed. Contact Meghan Shedlick or Claudine Gallo. PTO Co-Presidents, if you would like to provide assistance to the PTO.
Attending school functions and helping at PTO events are great ways to meet people and support your child’s school at the same time. I truly believe the more parents are involved in our school, the more involved children will become. They will certainly follow your lead!
